Ethiopia continues to face challenges related to migration, says Deputy Premier
Addis Ababa, June 25, 2024 (FBC) – In his opening remarks at the annual consultative forum of the National Migration Council, Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh stated that Ethiopia is facing challenges related to migration.
“Even though moving from place to place is a natural phenomenon and a human right enshrined in the constitution, it should be managed in a proper manner,” he underscored.
“Smuggling of persons and human trafficking present significant threats to the human rights of African citizens. The National Migration Council has set a course to further enhance migration management and ensure robust refugee protection,” he added.
Ethiopia is currently sheltering more than 1 million refugees from various countries, as the nation has been facing multilayered challenges due to migration, Temesgen noted.
Temesgen, who is also chairperson of the National Migration Council, stressed the need for concerted global efforts to protect the rights of people crossing borders in search of a better life from violence by human traffickers. He highlighted the significance of working in collaboration works with other countries.
Heads of Regional States, high ranking government officials and chiefs of federal institutions have attended the consultative forum.
