PM says Ethiopia to harvest over 800mln quintals of crop yield this year
Addis Ababa, November 14, 2023 (FBC) – Responding the queries raised by parliamentarians at the 3rd year 4th regular session, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) stated that there is no doubt that there is increase in agricultural productivity.
“We see it greatly in agriculture. It doesn’t mean this is enough. More work needs to be undertaken. We need to make sure that the inputs and technology the farmer needs are also produced in country,” the Prime Minister said.
Achieving stabilization of the macroeconomic imbalance and shortcomings, modernizing the trade and investment climate and increasing productivity of the development sectors are among the objectives of the ongoing homegrown economic agenda, the Prime Minister said.
The government is working to replicate the achievements gained in the agriculture sector in other areas of activities including the industry, manufacturing and service sectors.
More than 22 hectares of land has been covered with crops this farming season and over 800 million quintals of crop yield is expected to be harvested, the Prime Minister said. This shows an increase of 2 million ha of land compared to the previous fiscal year, he said. The Agriculture sector has seen 6.3 percent growth, the Prime Minister said.
The Premier added that over 3 million ha of land will be covered with irrigated wheat farming this year as part of the efforts to increase productivity.
Rice farming is currently practiced in parts of the country with an expected outcomes of more than 40 million quintals of yield.
The industry sector has increased by 6.9 percent while the manufacturing industry has been improved by 7 percent.
Over the past five years, the GDP has doubled. The GDP has increased from 84 billion to 164 billion USD. The per capita income has increased to 1,549 from 882 during the past five years, the Prime Minister indicated.
The premier noted that the economy has grown withstanding the coronavirus, conflict and the global economic situation.
Ethiopia has continued to be one of the fastest growing economic in Africa and the world at large, the Premier said.
