Premier’s visit to Shanghai fruitful: PMO Press Secretary

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2023 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to the city of Shanghai, China, was effective in observing the experience and learning about the application of new technologies, according to Billene Seyoum, Head of Press Secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Highlighting Prime Minister Abiy’s visit to Shanghai city, the PMO Press Secretary recalled the Premier and his delegation had made a working visit to various areas of Shanghai where the PM’s first stop was to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Reminding the establishment of Ethiopian Capital Markets Authority recently, she noted that the visit to Shanghai stock exchange, one of the most famous in the world, important to gain experience and observe the application of the contemporary technology.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange consists of about 2,000 companies, she said emphasizing that this is a good experience for Ethiopia.

Billene said that as a developing country, Ethiopia can learn a lot from China because the two countries have a lot in common.

She further recalled the Prime Minister’s visit to Huawei Center in Shanghai while further reminding Huawei has many projects and investments in Ethiopia.

In particular, the company is playing its bit in the telecom sector which in particular contributes to achieve the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy that the East African country has embarked on, Billene further recalled.

While mentioning the bilateral discussions held between the leaders of the two countries, the Press Secretary noted that the discussions covered issues pertaining to sharing experiences of Shanghai with Addis Ababa.

The Prime Minister rounded off his stay in Shanghai by visiting the Yangshan Deep Water Port in the city [the world’s largest automated container terminal], Billene said.

She mentioned that the port is the largest in China and can handle many containers and is a part of the Belt and Road Initiative that operates with state-of-the-art technology that can learn a lot from.
