Ethiopia welcomes the 2016 new year

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia has just rang in its new year this morning, Meskerem 1, 2016 E.C.

Filled with optimism, hope, and joy, Ethiopians at home and abroad have also welcomed the new year in different events.

To herald the dawn of the new Ethiopian year, 21 cannons were fired at 12 o’clock local time in the morning.

In his new year best wishes to Ethiopians, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said, “By the grace of God, we bade farewell to the 2015 and welcomed the new year. “Ethiopia has been victorious beating through its challenges, against all odds,” he said.

“We have reached here because we have a firm value, a strong people and the Almighty God,” the Premier asserted.

“Overcoming many challenges, we have achieved multiple successes,” said the Prime Minister.

Despite the challenges that we faced, we have left them behind and putting us in strong foundation, the premier recalled.

All our successes are the results of our multi-national unity, he said, adding whereas the challenges which tested us are the results of our disagreement.

PM Abiy vowed that the peace and wellbeing of Ethiopia will be maintained on firm basis in the New Year through greater reduction of the challenges and enhanced multinational unity of the country.

We will elevate the country to the level which fits its development and prosperity, he said..

President Sahle-Work Zewde, on her part, said that the new year has given us a new perspective and thinking, as well as an additional opportunity to promise to do better, so we should capitalize on it properly.

She also called on the generation to work for the unity and peace of Ethiopia by taking lessons from the early generations of Ethiopia who maintain the country through solidarity.

The President emphasized that the new year should be a year where we work to spread love and solidarity by eliminating hatred.

Ambassadors, heads of missions and diplomats of various countries as well as leaders and representatives of multilateral organizations based in Addis Ababa have also sent their best wishes on the new year to Ethiopians.
