Ethiopia’s climate action bears tangible success – MoPD
Addis Ababa, July 14, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Planning and Development (MoPD) stated that Ethiopia has gained credible success through the policies and strategies it implemented to respond to the impact of climate change.
The Ministry held a panel discussion on the launch of the 2023 Green Legacy program and its contribution to economic development by coping with the impacts of climate change.
In order to respond to the impacts of climate change, various activities have been carried out by formulating policies, strategies, long-term plans and organizing institutions, said Ms. Trumar Abate, the Minister of State at MoPD.
The State Minister underscored that Ethiopia’s recent climate actions have brought credible success. Besides to planting 25 billion seedlings in the last five years under the Green Legacy initiative, she said that efforts are being made to expand the initiative to neighboring countries.
Trumar also stated that the country is working with international organizations to promote the Green Legacy Initiative experience in global fora.
She recalled that Ethiopia recently announced a long-term strategy with a vision of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
There is a tangible change in the green legacy system of agriculture and other policies and strategies, which have paramount significance in preventing the impacts of climate change, the Minister of State underscored.
Ethiopia’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Director General Getahun Garedew said his country is implementing policies and strategies that ensure the sustainability of environmental affairs.
Stating that the Green Legacy program is healing the damage done to the environment, she noted that the program will increase the country’s forestland coverage and underground water resource reserves, compress greenhouse gases and create a healthy environment.
