Ethiopian Red Cross Society provides 108.7mln birr support to refugees who fled Sudan

Addis Ababa, July 11, 2023 (FBC) – In a press briefing, Secretary General of Ethiopian Red Cross Society Getachew Ta’a indicated that, to date, the Society has provided support in an amount of Birr 108.7 million to refugees arriving in the Ethiopian border town of Metema.

According to Getachew, the needs are vast mentioning psychosocial support, proper shelter, Restoring Family Links (RFL), water, food, hygiene and dignity kits as the most critical ones.

The Society is also planning to establish an information centre so as to assist beneficiaries to restore with their relatives after a separation.

The Secretary General accentuated the need for proper shelter construction for the refugees.

Getachew, a lot is expected from the host community in addressing the immediate needs of those beneficiaries.

Xavier Castellanos, Undersecretary General, National Society Development and Coordination of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) on his part praised the deeds of Ethiopian Red Cross Society in addressing humanitarian situation across the country.

He stressed on the need for strengthening humanitarian support for the people fleeing from Sudan thereby addressing the dire situation they are in.

Intervention in providing hygiene, water and protection chiefly for women and children is very critical Xavier added.

He also insisted humanitarian actors to contribute their share in addressing the various challenges that the nation is currently confronting.
