Ethiopia shares experiences on AI at a global summit in Geneva

Addis Ababa, July 8, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia shared its experience on Artificial Intelligence at an Ambassador’s Roundtable at the “AI for Good Global Summit 2023” organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU ) from 6-7 July 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN Office at Geneva and other International organizations in Switzerland, Tsegab Kebebew, in his intervention, highlighted Ethiopia’s experience on the field.

The Ambassador stated that in 2020 the government of Ethiopia established the first ever Artificial Intelligence Institute, mandated to provide research based artificial intelligence services mainly focused on five major areas such as AI Robotics, Big Data, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning and Computer Vision.

He further elaborated that the government primarily used AI for the improvement of the country’s health and agricultural sectors, revenue and tax collections, as well as customer chatbot for service providing organisations such as Airlines.

Amb. Tsegab underscored the need for enhanced international support to developing countries, particularly in Africa, in the context of development support, financing, and transfer of technology.
