Ethiopia reaffirms support for IGAD as contract signed with CCECC for construction of new HQ in Djibouti

Addis Ababa, April 2, 2023 (FBC) – The Intergovernmental Organization for Development (IGAD) has taken a significant step towards the construction of its new headquarters in Djibouti, having signed a contract with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) on April 2, 2023.

The event was attended by esteemed guests, including Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti, Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), the Executive Secretary of IGAD, and various Ambassadors of IGAD Member States.

During the ceremony, Berhanu Tsegaye, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Djibouti, reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to collaborating closely with the Secretariat to ensure the successful realization of the headquarters project.

He also called on other partners to join IGAD’s efforts. Meanwhile, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti, praised the Executive Secretary’s efforts in this regard and the organization’s overall undertakings, while also urging partners to continue supporting IGAD.

The new headquarters complex will be built on a 10,000 square meter land that was generously donated by the government and people of Djibouti in 1998. This milestone project underscores IGAD’s continued dedication to advancing regional integration and development, while also setting the stage for future partnerships and collaborations, the Ethiopian Embassy in Djbiouti said.
