Ethiopia earns $48.23mln in power export to neighboring countries in 7 months

Addis Ababa, March 23, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) announced that the country has earned US$48.23 million from electric power export to the neighboring Sudan, Djibouti, and Kenya in the past seven months.

In an exclusively interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Moges Mekonnen, Communication Director of EEP disclosed that the amount obtained from power export was in line with the country’s policy on green energy which contributes to the economic integration of the Horn of Africa.

The director explained that EEP secured 24.5 Million USD from Djibouti out of the planned 22.8 million USD in last seven months of the Ethiopian fiscal year.

He added that Ethiopia also obtained 20.6 and 3.09 Million USD from Sudan and Kenya respectively.

Moges said that power export earnings by Ethiopia shows the commitment of the government in realizing the AU’s Agenda 2063 which connects member states in their quest to economic integration.

He added that energy export creates peaceful economic integration through mutual resources sharing thereby securing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to nations in the region.

Speaking about National power supply, the director said that the installed capacity of EEP is 5200 Megawatts from which it is providing 2700 Megawatts of electricity from the demand pic load of 2930 megawatts.

He indicated that priority is also given to national power demand where EEP is exporting only 10 percent of its total power generation.

Regarding the construction of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Moges said that the developmental hydroelectric project aims electricity production to alleviate Ethiopia’s energy shortage and to increase electricity export to neighboring countries.

He added that the dam showcases Ethiopia’s considerable commitment in regional economic integration.
