Southern Ethiopia region appeals for humanitarian assistance to 2mln drought-affected citizens

Addis Ababa, March 6, 2023 (FBC) – The Southern Ethiopia Region Disaster Risk Management Commission has called on governmental and non-governmental bodies to respond quickly to the 2 million citizens affected by the severe drought in the region.

The region’s Disaster Risk Management Commission has confirmed through a survey that some 342,000 hectares of land has become arid due to lack of rain.

Usman Surur, the Rural Cluster Coordinator & Head of Agriculture Bureau of the region, disclosed that the lack of rainfall is the cause of the severe drought in the region.

The official emphasized that this problem needs to be addressed quickly.

Disclosing the need for urgent humanitarian assistance for 2 million citizens in the region, Usman called on governmental and non-governmental organizations to provide assistance, according to the regional media outlet’s report.
