Gov’t committed to curb internal displacement: DPM & FM Demeke
Addis Ababa, January 27, 2023 (FBC) – The FDRE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, held discussion with the UN Secretary General Special Adviser on Solutions to Internal Displacement, Robert Piper, at his office earlier today.
The discussions focused on the efforts to counter internal displacement and the efforts the government has put in place to curb the existing challenges.
Demeke briefed the Special Advisor about the government’s commitment to address natural and man-made internal displacements and the efforts underway to resolve problems that have already occurred.
Furthermore, to provide a sustainable solution to the problem, various development projects are well underway in affected areas, Demeke added.
Since the nature of the problem is urgent, as the DPM & FM Demeke stated, a national council led by the Deputy Prime Minister has been established and is discharging its duties. He called for the support of the international community in this regard.
Piper, for his part, affirmed that his office is working in close collaboration with the government of Ethiopia. He noted that Ethiopia’s efforts concerning bringing a durable solution to internal displacement can be taken as a model by other countries.
The Special Advisor further reaffirmed the UN office’s support in finances and capacity development for Ethiopia’s overall effort in the area.
During his stay, Piper has visited the government’s efforts in the Somali region to support internally displaced people and also met with leaders of international organizations residing in Addis Ababa.
