Reppie Waste to Energy Plant undergoing repair work
Addis Ababa, December 19, 2022 (FBC) – The Reppie Waste to Energy Plant, the first in its kind in Africa, is built on the Koshe landfill site in the capital, Addis Ababa. It was launched in 2013 as a municipal solid waste treatment plant.
The plant was inaugurated in September 2018 in the presence of high level government officials and representatives of international partners and consequently started operation.
But due to low quality of the waste entering the facility and shortage of skilled manpower, the plant has not managed to continue its operation as expected.
Currently the steam turbine and generator of the plant are being repaired under two months long maintenance scheme that will conclude at the end of December, Manager of the Project Biruk Eba said.
The plant is currently incinerating 600 ton of waste on daily basis albeit disruption in power generation, the Manager added.
The Reppie project is just one component of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to address pollution and embrace renewable energy across all sectors of the economy.
