Ethiopian athletes storm Sydney Marathon
Addis Ababa, September 18, 2022 (FBC) – Ethiopian athletes took the 2022 Blackmore Sydney Marathon race by storm, as Tigist Girma won the Women’s marathon followed by her compatriot, Letebrhan Haylay, who took second spot, while Chalu Deso Gelmesa finished 3rd in men’s race.
Ethiopian athlete Tigist Girma became the crown champion of the 2022 Blackmores Sydney Marathon in women’s race, clocking 2:25:10, on Sunday, September 18, 2022. Her fellow countrywoman, Letebrhan Haylay finished 2nd with 2:25:44 net time, and the Eritrean athlete Nazret Weldu came 3rd.
Other Ethiopian women athletes Rahma Tusa, Yenenesh Tilahun, Fantu Eticha, and Alemtsehay Aseffa finished 4th, 5th, 6th and 10th, respectively.
Meanwhile, 24 years old athlete Chalu Deso claimed 3rd spot in men’s race, clocking 2:07:09, where Kenyan athletes finished 1st and 2nd.
Fellow Ethiopian men athletes Abebe Negewo (2:07:26) and Olika Adugna (2:11:23) finished 4th and 5th, respectively.
The winner of the 2022 race received $250,000, currently the highest first-place prize money for a marathon in the world, according to organizers.
The Blackmores Sydney Marathon is part of the Sydney Running Festival and World Athletics Elite label road race series.
