Suppressing network of brokers key to combat human trafficking – DPM
Addis Ababa, August 18, 2022 (FBC) – The network of illegal brokers should be broken and legal accountability should be established in order to stop human trafficking, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonon, in an annual meeting of National Coordinating Council for Prevention and Suppression of Trafficking in Person and Smuggling of Migrants , a council which he chairs.
The Deputy Prime Minister instructed the council members should focus stopping illegal migration, which also prevents abuse of citizens when they migrate abroad.
He pointed out that citizens should be taught not to migrate, by creating a broad social movement and solve the problem permanently; foil the chains of illegal traffickers and hold them accountable.
Reducing the abuse of citizens living abroad illegally is an important step in our citizen-oriented diplomacy, affirmed the DPM.
He also recalled that more than 65,000 of the 100,000 citizens who find themselves in a difficult situation in Saudi Arabia have returned home as a result of citizen-oriented diplomacy, and after their return, apart from preparing a temporary shelter, they should go to their hometowns to help them establish themselves by using their knowledge, experience and money.
