Ethiopia successfully completes 3rd phase GERD filling
Addis Ababa, August 12, 2022 (FBC) – The third phase of water filling of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has been successfully completed.
The 3rd phase filling has been carried out following the start of Ethiopia’s traditional rainy season, and now the water has started gracefully flowing over the top of the dam.
This news came a day after the official inauguration of GERD’s 2nd turbine electric power generation.
The construction of civil works of the dam has reached 95%, and the overall project performance has reached 83.3%.
The announcement of the completion of the water filling was attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, President Sahlework Zewde, and other senior government officials.
At present, the construction of civil works of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has reached 95 percent and the overall project performance has reached 83.3 percent.
At the current height and water level of the dam, the two turbines are generating 540 megawatts of power.
When the dam starts generating power at full capacity, each turbine will generate 375 megawatts of power.
The dam covers an area of 1,680 square kilometers, holds 74 billion cubic meters of water, and 145 meters high and 1.8 kilometers long.
