IGAD says 29 million people in East Africa facing high level of food insecurity
Addis Ababa, April 11, 2022 (FBC) – Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) stated that 29 million people in East Africa are facing high level of food insecurity due to the recurrent drought condition.
The Executive Secretary appealed to IGAD member states and partners to join hands to prevent contain the dire situation in the region.
According to IGAD, out of the total people highly affected by the situation up to 16 million are in need of immediate food assistance.
Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are among the East African countries where a large number of people have been highly affected by the drought condition, it is stated.
