Referendum Votes for Regional State Formation
Addis Ababa, October 10, 2021 (FBC) – Ethiopian National Election Board announces that the South West Ethiopia referendum held on September 30, 2021 votes in favor of regional state formation.
According to Board Deputy Chair, Wubeshet Ayele, Konta Special District; West Omo, Bench-Sheko, Dawro, Kafa and Sheka zones, formerly administered under Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Regional State, have now voted for establishing their own regional state, making it the 11th state in the country.
Of the 1 million 262 thousand 679 who cast ballots, 1 million 221 thousand 92 voted for founding a regional state to be named State of South-West Ethiopia.
