Tana Beles Sugar project progressing well: Board Members
Addis Ababa, January 25, 2020 (FBC) –Board members of the Tana Beles Sugar Development project have visited the progress of the project.
Located in the Amhara regional state, a contract to execute the project was initially awarded to Metals and Engineering Corporation (MetEC) in 2011.
But later, the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation cancelled the contract with MetEC in 2018, citing problems of quality and delays in completing the project.
The contract was awarded to the Chinese construction firm, China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd (CAMCE), last September.
Weyo Roba, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ethiopian Sugar Corporation, told FBC that 67% of the project is completed now and the plant will start trial runs by May.
The project will be completed and reaches its full capacity by the end of this year, he indicated.
Tana Beles sugar development project is located in Awi Zone, Amhara regional state. It sees the construction of two sugar plants.
Once completed, each plant is expected to produce 242,000 tons of sugar and 20.8 million liters of ethanol a year.
