Government accepts call for ceasefire in Tigray region
Addis Ababa, June 28, 2021 (FBC) – The government of Ethiopia has accepted a call from the Interim Administration of Tigray and announced a unilateral ceasefire in the region over the already started agricultural works and ongoing humanitarian activities.
The government said the rule of the terrorist TPLF Junta which caused a dire situation to the nation for three decades has been expelled through popular struggle and sacrifices paid by Ethiopians across the nation.
In a statement, the government said the terrorist TPLF Junta failed to accept the repeated calls from the reformist federal government for forgiveness and perpetrated continuous atrocities and finally waged war against the nation.
According to the statement, the terrorist group disregarded calls from religious leaders and elders for reconciliation and peace. The government did not give up from trying multiple mechanisms to resolve the issue peacefully, it says.
Nothing hindered the TPLF group from administering the Tigray region despite its continued peretration of communal violences in all parts of the country, the statement says.
The terrorist group had mistaken tolerance of the federal government for weakness and committed a brutal attack on the northern command of the National Defense in November, 2020 putting the sovereignty of the nation at risk. And, the Junta committed inhumane acts against the troops of the national army including female soldiers and looted armaments and other properties from the national defense force.
In an offensive declared by the federal government, the national defense forces won victory over the terrorist force and forced its remnants to scater to some hideouts. After completing the law enforcement measures, the federal government has prioritized rebuilding of infrastructures damaged by the terrorist group and rehabilitation of the community affected by the conflict through strong humanitarian responses.
Taking into consideration the quest of the people of Tigray region for peace and development with respect to the already started agricultural works and humanitarian activities in the region, the government has accepted the call from the interim administration for a ceasefire.
The activities underway to bring the major perpetrators into justice will continue, the government said, calling civil and military structures at all levels to adhere to the ceasefire and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
The government vows serious law enforcement measure against anybody who will exploit the ceasefire for malicious agenda.
