Peace Minister Visits Flooding affected areas in Afar Region

Addis Ababa, September 15, 2020 (FBC) – A team led by Minister of Ministry of Peace, Muferiat Kamil has today visited areas affected by flooding in Afar Regional State.

A team led by the Minister has visited people who have been victimized by loss of lives and property due to the flooding triggered by overflew of the Awash River in the region.

The flooding could not be protected by weather forecasts and preventive measures undertaken by the government before the natural disaster occurred due to high rate of the overflow of the Awash River beyond what was expected, the Minister said on the occasion.

Such a devastating natural disaster related to the river and flash flooding has not been occurred over the last thirty years, it is stated.

The disaster has displaced a large number of families who are now demanding urgent humanitarian assistance, Muferiat noted.

The Federal and Regional Government organs along with member of the Federal Police, workers of Disaster Risk Management and inhabitants of the area have been undertaking rescuing and preventive activities since the natural accident occurred, according to the Minister.

The government will exert unreserved efforts to reverse the situation and rehabilitate the displaced, the Minister underlined.
