753 tons of fish harvested from GERD artificial lake in 7 months

Addis Ababa, February 19, 2024 (FBC) – Deputy Head of the Benishangul-Gumuz Region Agriculture Bureau, Berhanu Itecha, revealed that some 753 tons of fish have been harvested from the artificial lake of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

He also mentioned that the production was achieved by four licensed fishery unions in the last seven months.

In a exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Berhanu Itecha stated his Bureau granted licenses to 38 youth unions to engage in the sector.

Furthermore, the official underscored that proactive measures have been taken to preemptively address any potential challenges related to market connectivity for these unions.

When announcing the completion of the fourth round filling of the GERD reservoir in August 2023, PM Abiy Ahmed indicated that the dam’s artificial lake is ideal for aquaculture and fishery.
