70mln citizens set to receive national digital ID – INSA
Addis Ababa, September 15, 2022 (FBC) – Information Network Security Administration of Ethiopia (INSA) revealed that about 70 million citizens set to get a digital national ID within the next 4 years through the nationwide implementation of national digital ID.
INSA confirmed that International Identity Day will be celebrated in Ethiopia for the first time on September 16, 2022.
The National ID Program is a system that allows citizens to be recognized by establishing a reliable digital identification system in Ethiopia.
Therefore, it also helps to develop trust in the relationship between service providers and users in the government and private sectors, to establish a system of transparency and accountability. and to create a streamlined service delivery system, said INSA.
By equipping the program with the contemporary technology and making it cross-sectoral, a basic digital identification system is being established.
The national digital ID program has been tested in the safety net and industrial parks in Sidama region, Oromia region and Addis Ababa city administration, as well as in Hawassa, Debre Berhan, Wolayta and Adama universities. More than 300,000 citizens have received digital ID through the implementation in those areas.
The system enables to plan the national development properly, to create economic transition, to ensure good governance, to reduce redundancy and waste of resource when policies are formulated and development activities are carried out.
The National ID Program explained that Ethiopia’s digital identification system is working in collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure national security by making the digital identification system strong, reliable, accessible and confidential.
