Workshop on AU strategic framework for compliance, accountability in peace underway in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa March 20, 2023 (FBC) – The African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security (AUC-PAPS) is conducting a validation Workshop on the African Union Strategic Framework for Compliance and Accountability in Peace Support Operations at Elilly Hotel in Addis Ababa.
According to AUC-PAPS, the workshop aims to finalize and validate the AU Strategic Framework for Compliance and Accountability for AU’s Peace Support Operations (PSO).
AUC-PAPS stated that on the workshop participants will review the draft document and develop a roadmap for the endorsement and implementation of the strategic framework.
It added that participants include Peace Support Operations (PSOs), UN, think tanks, representatives and other partners from various departments of the Commission are partaking on the workshop.
During his opening remarks, Adebayo Kareem, Compliance Coordinator on behalf of Director Sarjoh Bah, Conflict Management Directorate Director (CMD) of AUC/PAPS, said that protecting civilians, respecting the rights of people and conducting its operations in compliance with all applicable stakeholders and other provisions is a military necessity.
Marcel Akpovo, Head UN Human Rights regional representation in East Africa (OHCHR-EARO) on his part underscored OHCHR’s commitment to promote human rights and reiterated the importance of placing human rights at the heart of ongoing efforts for peace.
He also recommended leveraging the framework to advance the compliance imperatives at all levels.
