Ethiopia’s FM calls for transparency, fairness in new AU structure
Addis Ababa, February 6, 2020 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedu Andargachew, has called for transparency and fairness in new African Union (AU) structure.
Gedu made the call today at the 36th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU which was opened in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa at the AU headquarters.
“The transition to the new AU structure should ensure transparency and take into account the rights of employees” he told the participants.
AU’s human resources structure should reflect the experience and competence of employees and their capacity to carry out responsibilities, Gedu added.
The two-day meeting was opened with a welcome remark by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The Executive Council will consider the draft agenda and the draft decisions and declarations of the Assembly with appropriate recommendations for consideration by the Heads of State scheduled to take place from 9-10 February 2020.
The meeting of the Executive Council brings together all the Ministers of the 55 African Union Member States based in Addis Ababa, as well as AU officials.
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs will reconvene in close session to deliberate on the different items on their agenda, including the report of (PRC); the annual report on the AU activities for the period of January to December 2019 and the 14th report of AUC Chairperson on the implementation of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa.
Among the high moments during the Executive Council will be the election and appointment of one Member of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, 6 Members of the AUC on International Law and 10 Members of the Peace and Security Council of the AU.
