$32.61mln earned from electric sale to neighbouring countries in 5mos: EEP

Addis Ababa, January 13, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that it has collected 32.61 million USDs from electric power export to neighbouring countries in the last five months.

Moges Mekonnen, Director of Communications of EEP, said that in the last five months of the current fiscal year, $32.61 million of foreign currency was obtained from the sale of electric power to Sudan and Djibouti.

The Director stated that a total of 580 million kilowatt hours of electricity has been supplied to the two countries.

Ethiopia has started supplying power to Kenya in accordance with the recent agreement to supply electric, he recalled.

Moges indicated that the income obtained in the last 5 months has decreased by 6.2 million USD compared to the same period of the previous year, confirming that the reason was the consumption of electricity in Sudan has relatively decreased.

The Director also disclosed that neighbouring countries are increasingly interested in getting electric power from Ethiopia.

ENA’s report indicates that infrastructure expansion works are being carried out to respond to future electric power needs from the neighbouring nations.
