Addis Ababa, December 2, 2019 (FBC) -State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Markos Tekle this afternoon received a delegation led by the UN special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, David Kaye.

Ambassador Markos briefed the delegation on the massive political and economic reforms undertaken since Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed came to office, including freedom of expression and human rights.

The release of thousands of political prisoners and journalists as well as the measures taken to widen the space for media and political parties received widespread international praise, the State Minister said.

Deputy Attorney General, Dr Gedion Timotiwos, also briefed the delegation on issues related to human rights, freedom of opinion and expression.

“As I understood from the briefing, democracy and human rights are improving significantly in Ethiopia,” David Kaye.

He also assured the Government of Ethiopia of UN’s continued support to the good outcomes achieved in democracy and human rights.

During its week-long visit, the delegation will meet with officials of Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority, Ministry of Peace, Parliament, CSOs, Federal Police Commission and the Attorney General, among others.

David Kaye is the first United Nations human rights special rapporteur to visit Ethiopia in a decade.
