Attorney General to file charges against June coup suspects
Addis Ababa, November 13, 2019 (FBC) –The Federal Attorney General announced that it is preparing to file charges this week against suspects of the June 22, 2019 coup attempt in Amhara regional state.
In a press conference issued today, Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye, said 15 individuals were killed and 20 others injured in the coup attempt led by Brigadier General Asaminew Tsige.
Following the incidents, arrest warrants were issued for 70 suspects and 31 of them were taken into custody. Bank accounts of 22 suspects were frozen, he said.
Moreover, several weapons, mobile phones, foreign and local banknotes and five vehicles were seized in connection with the incident, he said.
Preparations have been made to file charges against 78 suspects (55 from Bahir Dar and 23 from Addis Ababa), he said.
Chief of Staff of the National Defense Force, Gen. Seare Mekonnen, Chief Administrator of the Amhara regional state, Dr Ambachew Mekonnen and his advisor Eizez Wasie, the regional state’s Attorney General, Migbaru Kebebe, and Major General Geza’e Abera were among the officials killed in the incident.
