No force could stop Ethiopia from building GERD, says Premier
Addis Ababa, October 22, 2019 (FBC) –Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed said no force could stop Ethiopia from building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The Prime Minister made the remark in response to a question raised by members of the House of People’s Representative regarding Egypt’s current stand towards the dam.
He said the Government of Ethiopia has no intention to harm the people and Governments of Sudan and Egypt.
Ethiopia is building the dam not to harm other but to get the benefit from its resources, the Premier said, adding, the construction of the dam is underway causing no significant harm on the downstream countries.
“Our focus should be finalizing the dam as per the time table established,” he told the Parliamentarian.
There is no special agenda between Ethiopia and Egypt regarding the Renaissance Dam, the Prime Minister said, adding he is scheduled to meet the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to discuss on the issue within the coming two days.
He said the people and Government of Egypt will benefit if they directly provide support to Ethiopia’s green development strategy.
“There is no other option. War cannot be a solution.No force could stop Ethiopia from building the dam,” he said.
As far as the country’s foreign policy is concerned, the Prime Minister said Ethiopia’s foreign policy gives priority for its relations with neighboring countries
The Prime Minister further said his government would attach greater attentions to control inflation, create employment opportunities, address housing problems and to attract more tourists.
