Premier meets with Muslim leaders
Addis Ababa, September 18, 2019 (FBC) – Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed today met with representatives of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and Ethiopian Muslim Arbitration Committee at his office today.
The meeting came after members of the Council and Arbitration Committee expressed their desire to engage in cleaning ahead of the Meskel celebration, to honor fellow Orthodox Christians, according to office of the Prime Minister.
Meskel is an annual Ethiopian Orthodox festival, which commemorates the discovery of the True Cross.
It occurs on September 27 or on 28 September in leap years. This year it will be celebrated on September 28.
Meskel festival is one of Ethiopia’s heritages registered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The centerpiece of this uniquely festival is the burning of a massive conical pyre called a Damera.
The largest ceremony takes place in Addis Ababa at the Meskel Square, where hundreds of thousands of people gather to watch the colorfully dressed priests chant, pray and dance.
