IGAD Ministerial meeting on Nairobi Declaration underway in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, September 18, 2019 (FBC) – The IGAD second Ministerial stocktaking meeting on the Nairobi Declaration and Action Plan is underway in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
The Nairobi Declaration and Plan of Action on durable solutions for Somali refugees and reintegration of returnees in Somalia was adopted by Heads of State and Government of IGAD in March 2017.
In her opening remark, Ms. Fathia Alwan, Director for Health and Social Development of IGAD, said “Despite challenges, I wish to call upon all of us to sustain our resolve and efforts towards finding durable solutions for refugees, returnees and host communities”
Today’s meeting will review the progress made so far in regards to the implementation of the declaration.
Ahead of today’s inter-ministerial meeting, technical experts from the IGAD Member States met for the past two days to organize a report outlining the implementation performance and to prepare work plans.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of refugees in the Horn of Africa remains high with over 4 million and another eight million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
