Nat’l committee led by PM evaluates performance of ‘Doing Business’ initiative
Addis Ababa, July 23, 2019 (FBC) – Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed and members of the ‘Doing Business’ steering committee evaluated the milestones achieved over the past few months.
They also reviewed the medium and long term goals set to improve Ethiopia’s ease of doing business ranking, according to office of the Prime Minister.
With a vision of placing Ethiopia among the top 100 ‘Doing Business’ ranking countries by 2021, the national committee led by the Prime Minister, comprising key government entities, has undertaken key reforms over the past few months towards creating a conducive business environment.
While the short term milestones have been on legal reforms, PM Dr Abiy highlighted that institutional reforms to build the requisite implementation capacity and creating public awareness on the new ways of doing business will be a key component in the medium to long term.
Moving forward, PM Dr Abiy assigned chairing of the national ‘Doing Business’ committee to the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Innovation and Technology on a rotation basis, to drive the implementation of established medium and long term priorities set.
He also announced that a new national level committee will soon be launched to steer progress in jobs creation and investments over the course of the 2012 Ethiopian Calendar, in synchronicity with the ‘Doing Business’ committee.
Creating an enabling business environment for private sector investments is a critical pillar for creating 3 million jobs in the New Year, the office stated.
The Prime Minister launched the ‘Doing Business’ initiative last December to improve Ethiopia’s business and investment climate.
The initiative, which is an integral part of Ethiopia’s action plan for jobs, is expected to make Ethiopia a competitive place to start and grow businesses.
Ethiopia ranks 159 out of 190 in ease of doing business.
