House approves labor law
Addis Ababa, July 4, 2019 (FBC) –The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) today unanimously approved the labor law drafted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
It was noted that the law is vital to ensure that worker-employer relations are governed by the basic principles of rights and obligations.
It also enables workers and employer to maintain industrial peace and work in the spirit of cooperation towards the economic growth the country.
It also helps to guarantee the right of workers and employers to form their respective associations and to engage, through their lawful elected representatives as well as to lay down the procedure for the expeditious settlement of labor disputes, which arise between workers and employers.
It is also vital to strengthen and define by law the powers and duties of the government organ charged with the responsibility of inspecting labor administration, particularly labor conditions, occupational safety, health and work environment.
The House also approved the draft bill tabled to amend the value added tax (VAT) law, which was enforced for the past 17 years.
The amendment of the law was needed to put in place efficient business climate and provide proficient service for taxpayers, it was noted.
