House postpones Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa councils elections
Addis Ababa, July 31, 2019 (FBC) –The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) today decided the Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa cities councils as well as local elections to take place together with the upcoming general election.
The House made the decision following a letter sent to it by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on July 11, 2019, requesting for more time to recruit, organize and train poll workers.
After reviewing the letter, the House decided the election of both cities councils to be conducted together with the upcoming general election.
According to the decision passed by the House, the current councils of both cities will continue until the upcoming general election is held.
Election of the Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa cities councils was supposed to take place last year. However, it was postponed for this year due to security concern.
In its today’s urgent session, the House is also expected to approve the draft bills prepared to amend customs, banking business, and land expropriation and compensation laws.
