EU reiterates commitment to Ethiopia’s democratization journey
Addis Ababa, July 22, 2019 (FBC) – Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed met Neven Mimica, European Union (EU) Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, at his office this morning.
During the talks, Mimica reconfirmed EU’s support to Ethiopia to the Prime Minister for continuing to drive the reforms unabated, according to office of the Prime Minister
Citing previous and forthcoming financial support, he reiterated the EU’s firm political commitment to Ethiopia’s democratization journey, it added.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia and EU signed a €36 million budget support program to make Ethiopia’s economy grow greener.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide and Mimica, signed the agreement.
The majority of the EU’s contribution, €33 million, will be channelled through the Ethiopian government.
This budget support aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from forestry and industry.
An additional €3million Euro will enhance the country’s measurement, reporting and verification systems, making them compliant with Paris Agreement standards.
Ethiopia’s deforestation is responsible for 37 % of the country’s total (GHG) emissions. EU intervention in this sector will support the country in improving forest management and reducing deforestation.
