EPRDF Executive Committee concludes meeting
Addis Ababa, May 16, 2019 (FBC) –The Executive Committee of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has concluded its meeting after reviewing the success and challenges experienced in the implementation of a national security plan during the past one-year reform period.
The Committee, who reviewed in-detail the works done to maintain national security, praised the return of opposition political parties who were in exile and the rapprochement between Ethiopia and Eritrea as key gains made after the reform.
The Committee also commended the institutional reforms undertaken in the security organs, including the reshuffling of leadership, and more importantly the reforms carried out to modernize the defense forces.
Despite these significant progresses, it also highlighted the challenges experienced during the past one-year, which include rise of extreme ethnic nationalism, illicit movement of weapons, and circulation of fake news via social media, resulting in loss of lives and displacements as well as posed threat for the national security.
After the discussion, the Committee also set future directions. Stressing that maintaining national security and ensuring rule of law are government’s priority agendas, it underscored the need to rigorous efforts to ensure the wellbeing of the people.
The Committee further stressed the importance of finding durable solutions for problems related to administrative boundary issues and called for review on the structure of regional security forces based on the Constitution.
The Committee also called on security forces and leadership at all levels to show commitment in protecting the democratic and human rights of citizens. It also called on the public to cooperate with security officials to maintain peace in their respective areas.
