Africa-a Continent of Hope and Aspiration: Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO
Addis Ababa, May 16, 2019 (FBC) – Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ethiopian Airlines Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam has said Africa is a continent of hope and aspiration.
He made the remark while giving his commencement speech at the University of Mississippi School of Journalism and New Media on 11 May, 2019 in the Tad Smith Coliseum on the Oxford campus, USA.
“The continent of Africa is not well understood, especially here in the United States and it is a continent of hope and aspiration. It is rich in natural resources and young population, attractive destination for FDI, a growing middle income society and consumer market,” he said.
Mr. Tewolde also mentioned the promising partnership and strategic initiatives that Ethiopian Airlines Group and the University of Mississppi maintain collaboratively, to which he referred as a way to forge alliance between Ethiopia and the United States.
Will Norton Jr., Dean of the School of Journalism and New Media remarked, “Under his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines has become the largest airline in Africa and the most modern airline in the world.”
The dean also added “throughout this difficult time for his airline and the people of Ethiopia, he has provided remarkable leadership.”
Mr. Tewolde was appointed as Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines in January 2011 and he is one of the titans of the most dynamic and hyper-competitive aviation industry in the world.
Besides making the airline a multi-award winning four-star global airline, Mr. Tewolde himself has won prestigious awards including the African CEO of the Year, Best African Business Leader, The Airline Strategy Award for Regional Leadership the 2015 International Grand Prix Special Award in Milan and the Most Gender Focused CEO Award 2015 among others.
He earned his B.A. Degree in Economics from the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Open University in the United Kingdom.
