About 80 Neonatal Intensive Care Units to go operational in two months’ time
Addis Ababa, May 21, 2019 (FBC) –The Ministry of Health (MoH) said a total of 80 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) centers will begin rendering service within the coming two months.
In an interview with FBC, Dr Amir Aman, Minister of Health, said that about 60 of them are currently ready to give services. The remaining 20 centers are also nearing completion.
All the Neonatal Intensive Care Units established in 80 hospitals will go operational in two months time, Dr Amir said.
According to him, the establishment of NICU centers has been started two years ago in 80 zones across the country at a cost of $ 35 million US dollars.
In addition to installing equipment in the centers, the ministry is preparing health professionals, the he said.
In a twitter post last October, the Dr Amir said his ministry began installing equipment in various hospitals procured at a cost of over 678.8 million birr.
Access to quality NICU is key in reducing mortality during the neonatal period, he said.
