GERD will be completed in 2022, says Ministry
Addis Ababa, December 13, 2018 (FBC) –The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project will be completed in 2022, according to the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity.
The project was initially expected to be completed in 2017. It was commenced in April 2011.
A panel discussion intended to assess the status of the project is underway in Addis Ababa today.
The project has taken longer than expected due to lack of detailed study and research during its commencement, it was noted at the discussion.
Ethiopia loses 800 million US dollars annually due to delay in the construction of the project, it was stated.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project is 65 percent complete now.
Once completed, the dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.
