Premier returns home after concluding China and Eritrea visits
Addis Ababa, September 6, 2018 (FBC) -Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has returned home after concluding his visits to China and Eritrea.
In China, he attended the 7th summit of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing on 3 and 4 September.
During his two-day working visit to Eritrea, the Prime Minister visited Assab and Massawa ports as well as the 71-km Assab main highway to the Ethiopian border.
He also held tripartite summit with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed on enhancement of regional ties of partnership.
In a press conference he issued at Addis Ababa Bole Airport, the Premier said his visits to China and Eritrea were successful.
“In addition to attending the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), I had productive discussions with African and Chinese leaders as well as chiefs of international agencies on the sidelines of the event,” he said.
During a discussion held with Chinese government officials, they agreed to extend to 30 years the loan for the Ethio-Djibouti railway which was intended to be reimbursed over 10 years. Its grace period has also been extended, he said.
The Chinese official also agreed to make adjustment on other loan packages, he stated.
The visit to Eritrea was aimed at assessing the implementation of the agreements signed between the two countries.
“We visited the preparatory works at Assab and Massawa ports,” he said, adding “Ethiopia will begin to use Assab port soon.”
Ethiopia official reopened its embassy in Asmara, Eritrea today in the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.
The Prime Minister finally wished all Ethiopian a happy New Year which will be celebrated next week.
