Engineer Simegnew, project manager of GERD, committed suicide: Police preliminary report
Engineer Simegnew was found dead in his car parked at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa last July.
Addis Ababa, September 7, 2018 (FBC) – Engineer Simegnew Bekele, project manager of GERD, had committed suicide, according to a preliminary investigation report made public by the federal police today.
Engineer Simegnew was found dead in his car parked at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa on July 26, 2018.
“His death was a suicide,” said Zeyinu Jemal, Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General.
He killed himself from a “contact shoot,” he told journalists.
Forensic results prove that the pistol found in his car belonged to himself and his car engine was running at the time of his death. The car was on automatic lock when police arrived at the scene, he said.
Engineer Simegnew also made phone calls to various workers at his office before his death, according to the Commissioner.
He said the investigation was conducted in collaboration with Ethio-telecom, Information Network Security Agency (INSA) and Moenco Ethiopia, an automotive company.
The Commissioner said Engineer Simegnew’s cause of death could be resulted from delays of the project.
The Commissioner added that further investigation into the cause of his death will continue.
Engineer Simegnew had been manager of GERD since the launch of the project in 2011.
