Afework Kassu addressed G77 Ministerial Meeting
Addis Ababa, September 28, 2018 (FBC) – State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Professor Afework Kassu participated at the G77 Ministerial meeting today and delivered remarks underscoring the importance of accelerating the integrated implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement in order to shift the world on to a sustainable and resilient path of inclusive growth.
The State Minister said that international community has been implementing the ambitious and transformative 2030 Agenda. However, we are concerned that the rate of progress is insufficient to fully meet the SDGs by 2030. Poverty, rising hunger, youth unemployment, growing inequality, among others, continue to pose serious challenges for the realization of our common agenda. Moreover, climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, threatening the survival of climate vulnerable countries and undermining hard-won development gains, said state Minister.
The State Minister emphasized that accelerating the integrated implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement would be absolutely critical to shift the world on to a sustainable and resilient path of inclusive growth.
To eradicate poverty in all its forms and combat the adverse impacts of climate change, developed countries should fulfill their obligations to provide enough and predictable funding and transfer appropriate technologies in line with national development needs and priorities in which the Addis Ababa Action Agenda provides a comprehensive and transformative global financial framework.
He reiterated that the eradication of poverty has been the overarching policy objective of the Ethiopian Government by implementing comprehensive development policies and strategies, we have been registering encouraging pro-poor and rapid economic growth.
He underlined that Ethiopia continued to redouble its efforts to build a middle income and a climate resilient economy by 2025. To realize our vision, we are implementing SGDs by integrating them with our current national development plan -the Growth and Transformation Plan II. Cognizant of the challenge of financing SDGs in Ethiopia, we have been mobilizing all types of financial resources, aligned with our national development priorities, said, the State Minister.
